How to light a small room

Table lamp glowing beside a bed

Small rooms usually have one problem: a single ceiling light that flattens everything. The fix is not more brightness. It is more sources, placed lower, with warmer light.

Think in three layers

Good lighting comes in layers. Ambient light fills the room, task light helps you read or work, and accent light adds depth. In a small space, a ceiling fixture on a dimmer, one reading lamp and one low glow are often enough.

Go warmer and lower

Bulbs around 2700 K feel calm in the evening. Lamps placed at seated height pull the eye across the room instead of up to the ceiling, which makes walls feel further away.

Let one lamp do the talking

A sculptural table lamp can be the focal point of a whole room. Put it where you spend your evenings, keep it dimmable, and switch the overhead light off after sunset.

Start with one change tonight: turn off the big light and see how the room feels with a single lamp.
